This measurement can be used accurately up to 14 weeks gestation. Babyvision can establish the number of babies you are expecting and if a twin pregnancy is identified it is easier to identify the type of twin pregnancy at this early stage. We will check your baby is developing normally. We also understand that this may be the first time you have seen your baby so spend the time showing you your baby and pointing out all that we are able to see. If a problem is detected whilst we do not wish to worry you about your pregnancy we think it is important for you to have the knowledge that you will be looked after carefully and professionally. If a problem is detected during your scan we will discuss the findings with you in a sensitive way and provide you with as much information as we can. Babyvision uses excellent quality ultrasound equipment to obtain the best images, however, if you attend Babyvision and your pregnancy is earlier than 6 weeks gestation or we are unable to confirm an early viable pregnancy due to reduced image quality which may happen if the uterus is retroverted which means tilted back or have a high BMI we may offer a transvaginal internal scan during your appointment. A transvaginal scan is sometimes used in early pregnancy because you can get a clearer ultrasound image at an earlier gestation. This scan does not harm your baby.

Whilst you may get a positive pregnancy test before your period is even due it is a couple of weeks before the pregnancy is big enough to be seen on scan. In the early weeks how much we can see in very early pregnancy is different for every woman and every pregnancy. At 4 weeks gestation 2 weeks after conception when you have just missed your period we cannot detect the pregnancy on scan, all we can see is that the lining of the womb has become thicker.
Somewhere between 4 and 5 weeks, we can sometimes see a small black fluid area in the uterus but we cannot confirm it is a pregnancy sac until we can see something growing inside it. During the 5th week we can usually see a small pregnancy sac around 6mm and within it we can usually see a yolk sac. This confirms to us that this is definitely a pregnancy sac. Even at 6 weeks we sometimes struggle to see the baby and its heart beat even when things are going fine. At 6 weeks the baby measures approx.
At 7 weeks the baby can now be clearly seen measuring approx 10mm in length. At this stage we should always see the heart beating in a healthy live pregnancy. Wait one week more for your dating scan and see how much baby changes. At 8 weeks baby now measures 16mm in length and has a clear head and body. If you are lucky you can sometimes see the small arm and leg buds developing.

An ultrasound is a highly accurate means of dating a pregnancy. In a normal pregnancy, ultrasound can provide an estimate of the gestational age to within five to seven days of accuracy. In the first trimester, doctors usually use a transvaginal rather than abdominal ultrasound. The transvaginal ultrasound provides the most accurate information, given that the early developing gestational sac and fetal pole are extremely tiny at this point. A transvaginal ultrasound can get closer to the developing pregnancy.
In a transvaginal ultrasound, the doctor or technician inserts a thin probe into the vagina.

Hi Mums. I’m eight weeks and five days pregnant and had an early scan today due to my long history of miscarriage. Baby had a heartbeat but measuring only six weeks and six day. That’s 18 days of a difference. I know my dates are right and with a very uneventful sex life I know when it happened. I’m back in two weeks for another scan but I’m so upset.
My heart is broken and I can’t stay positive. Has anyone gone through this and had everything turn out okay?

First trimester scanning is useful to identify abnormalities in the early development of a pregnancy, including miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy, and provides the most accurate dating of a pregnancy. Technique First trimester scanning can be performed using either an abdominal approach or a vaginal approach. Abdominal scanning is performed with a full maternal bladder, provides a wider field of view, and provides the greatest depth of view.
Vaginal scanning is best performed with the bladder empty, gives a much greater resolution with greater crispness of fine detail. In circumstances where both approaches are readily available, the greater detail provided by transvaginal scans usually outweighs other considerations, and is preferred.
This is about the same as 2 mugs of instant coffee. The scan is just a more accurate way of assessing the baby’s growth. This may just be a week earlier than your expected date of delivery or it may be several weeks before, depending on how your baby is. His head was 1 week being and belly 2 weeks behind.

Back to Your pregnancy and baby guide. The inner cells form into 2, and then later into 3, layers. In these early weeks of pregnancy, the embryo is attached to a tiny yolk sac that provides nourishment. A few weeks later, the placenta will be fully formed and take over the transfer of nutrients to the embryo. The embryo is surrounded by fluid inside the amniotic sac. It’s the outer layer of this sac that develops into the placenta.
Cells from the placenta grow deep into the wall of the womb, establishing a rich blood supply. This ensures the baby receives all the oxygen and nutrients it needs.
